Network Detection & Response

See the attacks your firewall can’t.

Sophos NDR continuously analyzes east-west and north-south traffic to surface compromised hosts, command-and-control activity, and the lateral-movement patterns that signature-based defenses miss. Detections flow directly into Sophos XDR so analysts see the full attack chain in one workflow.

Key Capabilities

The detection layer between firewall and endpoint

Firewalls inspect what crosses the perimeter. EDR sees what runs on managed hosts. NDR covers the gap: everything in between, including the traffic that never reaches a Sophos-protected device.

East-west visibility

See lateral movement, internal recon, and server-to-server traffic that never touches the perimeter firewall. The blind spot where most breaches actually unfold.

AI-driven detection

Two complementary AI engines: a deep-learning model for known-bad pattern recognition, and a behavioural engine that learns your network’s baseline and flags drift.

Encrypted-traffic analysis

Detect malicious patterns inside TLS-encrypted sessions without decrypting them, using flow metadata, JA3/JA4 fingerprints, and encrypted DNS heuristics.

C2 & exfiltration detection

DNS tunneling, beaconing patterns, and outbound data-staging activity get flagged automatically, even when the traffic is encrypted or hidden in legitimate channels.

Coverage for unmanaged hosts

IoT devices, contractor laptops, printers, OT/SCADA equipment - anything that can’t run an endpoint agent. NDR sees them all on the network.

Native XDR integration

NDR detections appear inside Sophos XDR cases alongside endpoint, firewall, email, and identity events. One investigation workflow, no console switching.

Deep Dive

What firewalls and EDR miss

A typical breach has three phases the network sees clearly. Most security stacks see two of them and lose the third in a blind spot.

  • Initial access (the firewall sees it). A user clicks a phishing link, the malware payload arrives, the firewall inspects and either blocks or passes the traffic.
  • Execution on the endpoint (EDR sees it). If Endpoint Protection misses something, EDR captures the suspicious process activity locally on that host.
  • Lateral movement (nobody sees it, unless you have NDR). Attackers pivot to internal hosts the firewall doesn’t inspect and the EDR agent isn’t installed on. That’s where the dwell time happens.
  • NDR closes the gap. Continuous inspection of internal traffic catches the lateral movement, command-and-control beaconing, and data staging that other layers miss.
Who Deploys It

Organizations that already know they have blind spots

NDR is rarely the first product organizations buy. It’s usually the one they add after their first incident reveals how much traffic was happening that nobody could see.

1

Hybrid estates with unmanaged hosts

IoT devices, printers, contractor laptops, OT/SCADA equipment that can’t run an EDR agent. NDR doesn’t care - it sees them all as traffic on the wire.

2

PCI / HIPAA segmented networks

Regulated environments need detection on internal segments, not just at the perimeter. NDR satisfies the “monitoring across the protected enclave” requirement most frameworks bake in.

Post-incident hardening

After a breach, the question is always “how long was the attacker inside?” NDR gives you the answer next time - and produces the dwell-time evidence boards, auditors, and insurance carriers ask for.

Pairs Well With

NDR is a layer, not a standalone

NDR is most valuable as part of a broader detection program. These are the products it pairs with most often.

Sophos Firewall XGS
Network

Sophos Firewall

The natural pair. NDR sees what the firewall can’t (internal segments, encrypted-traffic anomalies); the firewall blocks what NDR detects.

Sophos XDR
SecOps

Sophos XDR

NDR detections are most valuable inside an XDR investigation, correlated with endpoint, identity, and cloud events. XDR is where the story comes together.

Sophos MDR
Managed Service

Sophos MDR

If you’d rather have a team watch the NDR feed for you, Sophos MDR includes 24/7 monitoring and investigation of NDR alongside the rest of the Sophos stack.
